New Years Eve Times Square 2014 Update: 1 Billion Expected to Watch as Sonia Sotomayor Lowers Ball
Tourists and New Yorkers are preparing for the 2013 Times Square New Year's Eve bash, but that massive, epic party does not just fall out of the sky like the world famous New Year's Eve Ball. Instead, hundreds of people are setting-up the biggest party of the year while a judge and pedal pushers prepare to help the New Year's Eve Ball drop.
Almost 800 people are currently working on Times Square's New Year's Eve party.
"We have to blow up the balloons that we hand out to people," Tim Tompkins, Times Square Alliance President, told WCBS. "We have to sort of stuff our little goody bags, and there's still some build-out to be done on the main stages where people perform."
"We've just installed all of the 2,688 Waterford crystal triangles with a new pattern," Jeff Strauss, Countdown Entertainment President, said. "One of the triangles is actually imagined by a young girl, a 12-year-old girl, at St. Jude's Research Hospital, and this was her design, which is a rose, and her message of hope, and beauty and positiveness for the New Year."
A U.S. Supreme Court Associate Justice now has less than 24 hours to prep her button-pressing finger for the big event. Yesterday, Times Square Alliance announced that Bronx native Sonia Sotomayor will press the button that sends the sparkly ball down its 60-second-long descent into 2014.
"Justice Sotomayor is an inspiration to many, and it is a privilege to welcome her to our celebration to ring in 2014," Tompkins said in a statement. "Who better to join us in the Crossroads of the World than one of New York's own?"
Over 1 million revelers will watch Sotomayor's work from Times Square, and 1 billion worldwide will enjoy the show from television.
Sotomayor is not the only who has some physical preparation to do.
Since Saturday, six Citi Bikes were hooked up to 12-volt deep cycle batteries so that volunteer riders could pedal around the city and generate the power needed to operate the New Year's Eve Ball.
"With the year's biggest party being powered by Citi Bike pedals, the world is in for an even more electrifying experience when the ball drops," Janette Sadik-Khan, Transportation Commissioner, said in a statement.
The bikes generate an average of 75 watts per hour, which will help more than 30,000 New Year's Eve Ball LEDs light up Times Square's sky. The Citi Bike Pedal Power Station is available today until 8 p.m.
Bugatti Vitesse 1,200-hp (The World's Fastest Convertible)
Seven gears via paddle shifts and an eight-liter, W-16 engine push the Vitesse from 0 to 250 mph in just 55 seconds, easily making it the world’s fastest convertible. And massive carbon-ceramic brakes stop the thing even faster; it can decelerate from 250 mph to a dead stop in around 10 seconds, providing a negative G force to the driver that's absolutely frightening. In short, this sleek beauty, which retails for $2.5 million, can also be a monster. It all depends on how you treat it.

Who got richer than anyone else in 2013? The CEO of Las Vegas Sands grew his wealth by a staggering $41 million a day.
Las Vegas Sands (LVS) chief exec Sheldon Adelson (pictured) hit the jackpot in 2013.
The gambling tycoon's net worth soared $15 billion, or 68%, through Friday. He is now worth just over $37 billion, and he's climbed from the nation's 11th richest this fall to No. 5 at the moment.
Put another way, his fortune grew by a staggering $41 million a day.
Adelson added more to his fortune than any other person, thanks largely to the success of his casinos in Macau and Singapore, which led to stellar financial results. Not even canceling plans to open a Sands casino in Madrid could dampen his year.

The second biggest gainer, in dollar terms, was Facebook's (FB) Mark Zuckerberg. Shares of the social network shot past its 2012 IPO price for the first time in July and the firm joined the S&P 500 on Friday.
Still not 30 years old, Zuckerberg is worth nearly $26 billion, more than double what he was worth a year ago. That means that in percentage terms, he actually beat out Adelson (though Ubiquiti Networks' (UBNT) Robert Pera has bragging rights as the American billionaire with biggest percentage gain in 2013, up 200%).

Charlotte Hornets Brand Identity Reveal
We received word back in May that Charlotte’s NBA franchise would be changing its nickname back to the Hornets beginning in the 2014-15 NBA season, and the team officially unveiled its logos and brand identity at a halftime ceremony on Saturday.
From the official release:
“The primary logo utilizes the purple and teal color palette and features an aggressive-looking hornet that is ready to attack. Its piercing eyes, raised antennae, expanded wings and pointed stinger depict its relentless intensity. Incorporated within the logo is a basketball that doubles as the hornet’s body. The Charlotte Hornets wordmark is written across the insect. The logo contains several odes to that of the original Hornets with its white wings, white accents within its eyes, a stinger and the inclusion of a basketball.
“The logo represents several characteristics of actual hornets, including their swarming and attacking nature, along with their fierceness and relentlessness when protecting their nests. These same characteristics connect with the city of Charlotte itself. The city’s rebelliousness, aggressiveness and protective attributes date to the Revolutionary War when British commander General Cornwallis referred to Charlotte as “a hornet’s nest of rebellion.” …
“The secondary logo features a side view of the hornet in an attacking position with elongated wings, aggressive eyes and extended stinger. The body once again consists of a basketball, while the curled body shape represents the letter “C” for the city of Charlotte. It also consists of the purple and teal colors like the primary logo.
“The Hornets wordmark includes the word Charlotte in teal written above the purple Hornets name. The entire brand identity – logos and wordmark – was designed in collaboration with senior executives within the Bobcats organization; Jordan Brand, a division of Nike; and the NBA’s Global Merchandising Group. Both Jordan Brand and Nike have a long history of working with professional teams and universities in developing brand identities and utilize some of the world’s most highly recognized designers.”
All of this is very cool — fans both locally and nationally seem to relate to the original nickname and color scheme, and are looking forward to the change taking place. The primary and secondary logos can be viewed below, and for all things Hornets in the future check out BackBuzzCity.com.
Chase bank opens Sunday to deal with Target card hack
Following the massive credit and debit card security breach at Target stores, Chase bank on Sunday said more than a third of its branches would be open across the country to help affected customers.
"We'll have the highest density in the Northeast, California and Southeast and prioritize branches near major shopping centers or those that have instant issue (where they can reissue debit card on the spot)," the bank said in a statement.
"(Our) employees have been unbelievable offering to work today, the Sunday before Christmas, to help customers," the statement said.
The move comes after JPMorgan Chase, the largest bank in the United States, told customers Saturday that they would be limited to $100 in cash withdrawals and $300 in total purchases per day if they used Chase debit cards at Target during the recent security breach.
The limit applies to about 2 million customer accounts, Kristin Lemkau, a Chase spokeswoman, told NBC News. That represents less than 10 percent of Chase customers, she said. The limit does not apply to Chase credit cards.
Separately, a source familiar with the situation told CNBC that Citibank was also imposing limits on debit cards for affected customers if it sees suspicious activity, though the extent of those limits was not immediately clear.
Target announced earlier this week that as many as 40 million debit and credit cards were compromised during the breach, which the store said began just before Thanksgiving and ended Dec. 15.
The security breach exposed customer names, card numbers, expiration dates and the short security codes known as CVVs. The industry blog Krebs on Security, which first reported the breach, has reported that card accounts are already being sold on the black market.
Target, eager to repair the public-relations damage and restore customer trust, has apologized and offered a 10 percent discount at its stores this week.

The Beginning of the End: The Top 10 Drug Policy Stories of 2013
2013 will go down in history as the beginning of the end of our disastrous war on drugs. 58 percent of Americans nationally support marijuana legalization. World leaders like former UN head Kofi Annan are calling for an end to the drug war. US Attorney General Erik Holder is speaking out against racist mandatory minimum drug laws and mass incarceration.
Celebrities like Will Smith, Scarlett Johansson and Jennifer Hudson joined 175 other celebrities saying No More Drug War in a letter to the President. Just last week, Uruguay became the first country in the world to legalize marijuana. Below are some of the top stories that made 2013 a watershed year in the fight to end America's longest failed war.
#1. White House Allows Marijuana Legalization Laws to Proceed in Colorado and Washington
Last November Colorado and Washington made history when they voted to legalize marijuana. The big question was how were President Obama and the federal government going to respond. In August, Attorney General Eric Holder informed the governors of Washington and Colorado that the Department of Justice would allow the states to implement their ballot initiatives that legalized the production, distribution, and sale of marijuana for adults.
#2. Gallup Poll Finds Record 58 percent of Americans want to Legalize Marijuana
In October a Gallup poll found a record breaking 58 percent of Americans support making marijuana legal, with only 39 percent opposed. Support for legalization has jumped an extraordinary 10 percentage points since last November when Colorado and Washington State legalized marijuana. Colorado and Washington showed the world that it is possible to legalize marijuana. More U.S states and countries are sure to follow in 2014 and 2016.
#3. Uruguay Becomes 1st Country in the World to Legalize Marijuana
Last week, Uruguay became the first nation to make recreational marijuana legal for adults and to regulate its production, distribution and sale. The marijuana legalization proposal was put forward by President José Mujica and approved by the House and Senate. By approving this measure, Uruguay represents the vanguard of growing opposition to the drug war in Latin America and throughout the world.
#4. Attorney General Eric Holder Slams U.S. Mass Incarceration and Mandatory Minimums
In September, Attorney General Eric Holder offered the Obama administration'smost forceful critique to date of U.S. mass incarceration policies, at a meeting of the hemisphere's security ministers in Medellín, Colombia. He also emphasized the Obama administration's efforts to scale back mandatory minimum sentencing policies.
"The path we are currently on is far from sustainable," said Holder. "As we speak, roughly one out of every 100 American adults is behind bars. Although the United States comprises just five percent of the world's population, we incarcerate almost a quarter of the world's prisoners... It carries both human and moral costs that are too much to bear. And it results in far too many Americans serving too much time in too many prisons - and beyond the point of serving any good law enforcement reason."
#5. Superstar-Studded Coalition to President Obama: Let's Tackle Mass Incarceration and Failed Drug War
In April, a coalition of over 175 artists, actors, athletes, elected officials and advocates, brought together by hip-hop pioneer Russell Simmons and Dr. Boyce Watkins, presented an open letter to President Obama, urging him to change the United States' criminal justice policy from that of a punitive, suppression-based model to one that favors evidence-based prevention and rehabilitation. The letter, signed by Will Smith, Sean "Diddy" Combs, Scarlett Johansson, Ron Howard, Jennifer Hudson, Demi Moore, Eva Longoria, Michael Moore, Mark Wahlberg, Harry Belafonte, Jada Pinkett Smith, Cameron Diaz, Lil Wayne, Nicki Minaj, Chris Rock, Russell Brand and John Legend generated worldwide media.
#6. New Zealand Becomes First Country in the World to Legally Regulate New Synthetic Drugs
New Zealand's Parliament enacted a landmark law to regulate and control - rather than criminalize -new synthetic drugs. The first-of-its-kind law, the Psychoactive Substance Act of 2013, came into effect on July 18, after being approved in Parliament by a 119-1 margin, with the support of seven different political parties from across New Zealand's political spectrum. Supporters of the legislation argued that outright criminalization is likely to drive these products to the underground market, which provides no age restrictions or other regulatory controls. What is more, attempts to ban one new substance after another have proven futile - each time one gets banned, another new, untested and oftentimes more dangerous drug fills the void to replace it. According to the New Zealand Ministry of Health, "Regulating psychoactive substances will help protect the health of, and minimize harm to, individuals who use these substances."
#7. ACLU Report Finds Overwhelming Racial Bias in Marijuana Arrests
In June, the ACLU released a groundbreaking report "The War on Marijuana in Black and White: Billions of Dollars Wasted on Racially Biased Arrests", the first to examine nationwide state and county marijuana arrest data by race. The report documented racist marijuana enforcement and arrests in every single city and state in the country. The report generated an avalanche of media coverage in local, national and international media. The report was a catalyst for people all over the country to speak out against racist marijuana enforcement.
#8. The Incredible Impact Of Dr. Sanjay Gupta's Medical Marijuana Special
Dr. Sanjay Gupta aired a one hour CNN special on medical marijuana. The impact of his special and an op-ed that he wrote for CNN - where he apologized for his past opposition to medical marijuana - was incredible!
A major focus of the special was a young girl who needs medical marijuana to relieve her constant, debilitating seizures. Coincidently, there was legislation under consideration in New Jersey to expand its medical marijuana law so that minors can access it. The issue was sympathetically covered by Gupta, and within days, New Jersey Governor Chris Christie was being asked about the legislation. Just a few days later Christie committed to signing it.
Another manifestation of Gupta's impact came when President Obama's press secretary was asked whether Gupta's change of heart has caused the president to re-examine his position on medical marijuana.
More people asked me about the Sanjay Gupta special than almost anything else I've worked on over the past decade and a half. It is clear that Dr. Gupta's work is changing hearts, minds and ultimately lives.
#9. World Leaders Speak Out: Stop 'War on Drugs'
World leaders are speaking out frequently and forcefully against the war on drugs. Last month, former UN Secretary General Kofi Annan and former Brazilian President Fernando Henrique Cardoso delivered a devastating critique for CNN.com. Back in 2011, Kofi Annan, Paul Volcker and Richard Branson joined former presidents Fernando Henrique Cardoso (Brazil), César Gaviria (Colombia) and Ernesto Zedillo (Mexico) and other distinguished members of the Global Commission on Drug Policy in saying the time had come to "break the taboo" on exploring alternatives to the failed war on drugs -- and to "encourage experimentation by governments with models of legal regulation of drugs," especially marijuana. More recently, current presidents Juan Manuel Santos in Colombia, Otto Perez Molina in Guatemala, and José Mujica in Uruguay have joined these calls for reform. In May, the Organization of American States produced a report, commissioned by heads of state of the region, that included marijuana legalization as a likely policy alternative. The OAS report predicted a likely hemispheric move towards marijuana legalization in the coming years.
#10. Despite Progress, the Drug War Grinds On as Viciously as Ever
For all of the progress in 2013, the war on drugs is as vicious as ever. The worst drug war policies remain entrenched, as close to three-quarters of a million people are arrested for marijuana possession every year, and more than half a million people are still behind bars today for nothing more than a drug law violation. The bloodbath in Mexico has taken 70,000 lives in the last seven years. And overdose fatalities have doubled in the last decade.
We are at a paradoxical moment in our country. We are clearly moving in the right direction, toward a more rational drug policy based on science, compassion, health and human rights. But we need to step up our efforts, grow our numbers, and continue to win hearts and minds because the casualties from the war continue to mount every day. If the people lead, the leaders will follow.
Myanmar Opium Output Pushed Higher By Poverty, UN Reports
Official efforts to stamp out opium production in Myanmar are falling flat because poor farmers don't have alternative ways to make a living, a U.N. agency said Wednesday.
The U.N. Office on Drugs and Crime estimated in its annual Southeast Asia Opium Survey that Myanmar will produce 870 metric tons of opium in 2013, remaining the world's second-largest grower after Afghanistan. That would be a 26 percent rise over 2012 production.
The agency said last month that Afghanistan's opium production this year was 5,500 metric tons, a 49 percent rise.
The report said rising demand in Asia for illicit drugs has also have fueled Myanmar's increase.
The U.N. agency said the trend is particularly alarming as economic integration and improved infrastructure binding Southeast Asia and southern China facilitate opportunities for criminal trafficking.
The drug-producing heartland where the borders of Myanmar, Thailand and Laos converge, the infamous Golden Triangle, is also a major source of methamphetamine as well as heroin, which is derived from opium.
"The organized criminal networks that benefit from Southeast Asia's illicit drug trade are well positioned to take advantage of regional integration," UNODC representative for Southeast Asia and the Pacific Jeremy Douglas said in a statement.
The report said that just over 9 metric tons of heroin was seized in East and Southeast Asia in 2012, compared to 6.5 metric tons in 2010, while 2.7 metric tons of opium was seized in 2012 compared to 2 metric tons in 2010.
"The figures make clear that efforts to address the root causes of cultivation and promote alternative development need to be stepped up," UNODC executive director Yury Fedotov said in a foreword to the report.
The report also noted that "opium cultivation is generally linked to the absence of peace and security, which indicates the need for both political and economic solutions." A reformist, elected government in Myanmar, which in 2011 replaced almost five decades of military rule, is striving to make peace with ethnic minority rebels who have been battling for autonomy for decades.
Myanmar in 1999 declared a plan to eliminate illicit crop production by 2014, and production slipped to a low of 315 metric tons in 2006, but since then has been increasing.
The report recalled that Myanmar in the 1980s had been the world's largest producer of illicit opium. Although Afghanistan replaced it in 1991 as the largest producer, Myanmar's output climbed to a high of 1,600 metric tons in 1996.
Things an Unwed Father Needs to Know
The statistical shift is unmistakeable. In the United States today, 40% of all children born are born to unmarried parents. That figure was 18.4% in 2007. [Source: Centers for Disease Control] Accordingly, the number of unwed fathers is growing at an alarming pace.
We have all seen the statistics about the growing social problems that come from a child growing up without a father. In many cases, the unwed father and the mother are a committed but unmarried couple. But in far too many circumstances, the child will grow up without her father in the child's home.
If you find yourself, intentionally or unintentionally, as an unwed father, there are some things you need to know and do as you prepare to take on your role as a father who is not married to his child's mother.
Fathers need to establish paternity. In family law across the United States, if a married couple have a baby, the legal presumption is that the husband in that family is the father of the baby. But when a child is born outside of marriage, there is no legal presumption of paternity. Without establishing paternity, an unwed father has no legal standing as it relates to visitation, shared custody or the ability to make decisions about the welfare of the child.
The simplest way to establish paternity is to make sure that the unwed father's name is on the baby's birth certificate. Being with the mother at the hospital when the baby is born and helping her fill out the birth certificate forms is the least complicated way. If that is not possible, an unwed father can complete a Voluntary Acknowledgment of Paternity form in your state.
If the mother contests the father's paternity, he can contact a government agency like the Child Support Enforcement Division in his state or he can petition a court to establish his paternity. The unwed father will need to take a paternity test (for which a court may order the mother's cooperation) to establish his parental status.
In many states, legislation has created putative father registries where a man can acknowledge his paternity and then be notified of any legal proceedings concerning the child including proposals to change custody, to place the child for adoption or other such legal issues. If the father's state has a registry, he should get on it immediately after he becomes aware of the mother's pregnancy.
Gaining custody rights. Once an unwed father establishes paternity, he needs to work to determine his custody status. A man who is legally designated as the father has the same custody rights as a married father. If the unwed father and mother are raising the child together in the same home, custody is not an issue. But if at any time they separate, or if they are not intending to raise the child together, the father will need to petition a court to establish custody rights.
Fathers are generally at a disadvantage in a custody process because government agencies and family court judges usually start with the presumption that a child should be with his or her mother unless her custody would be detrimental to the child. So fathers who want custody of the child need to retain a family law attorney and start the legal process to establish custody.
In most cases, unless the mother is clearly unfit, the father will want to petition for joint or shared custody or he may want to allow the mother to have full custody with him only having visitation rights. If the mother is unfit to have custody of the child, he will want to petition for full legal custody.
Before a court determines legal custody for the child, the parents should get together and establish a parenting plan that defines roles and responsibilities. When this can be done in a friendly way between the parents, the courts likely to approve the plan they create.
Paying child support. Men who are fathers, regardless of their custody status, have financial responsibility for a child. The only way to avoid child support is for a father to have his paternity rights terminated which forever severs him from his child. If a father and mother are raising the child together, financial support happens informally. But if the parents separate, child support will become a formal legal obligation.
Child support is determined based on a number of factors including the parents' individual income levels and obligations, availability of other financial support, and the needs of the children. Each case is individual and the amounts of child support needed will be individually determined. But once child support is set by the courts, it becomes a primary financial obligation which can be enforced by government agencies. And whether or not the father has cooperation from the mother on things like visitation, child support obligations remain.
Unwed fathers have rights and responsibilites like any other fathers do. But given the lack of a legal marriage between the parents, establishing those rights and enforcing those obligations become infinitely more complicated. Man who find themselves as unwed parents, whether intentionally or not, need to take appropriate steps to ensure their parental rights and to meet their parental obligations. It is not a matter to be taken lightly when the life of a child is stake.
